Alleles? Dominant Phenotypes?

I'm really confused about gene's and phenotypes because my friends did that hand clasping one and i was the only one who's hands went right over left, and it fascinated me. But i just don't get it! Any of it! Someone explain it to me in simple kid format please with no big words. So far what i think is there is a dominant gene and a recessive gene and the dominant one is normal and the recessive one is unique and i just have a unique gene. Yeah i think im wrong.
