Why won't my ipod touch connect to the internet?

I have an ipod touch but it won't let me get on the internet. I have been searching for answers to this problem and haven't found any. When I go under settings then wifi and go under my network the IP address is 169.254.35.232 and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 everything else is blank. I don't understand why it won't connect. Well it says its connected but doesn't work when you try to get on the internet. We have hughes net and I think the router is Belkin. I also tried to check my mail and I have yahoo but apparently you can't check it from the ipod unless you pay for an upgrade on yahoo mail. So I signed up at Gmail which allows you to connect from the ipod for free but when I try to it says imap.gmail.com failed or something like that. Also if I try to get on the internet it says it cannot open the page, operation could not be completed and invalid argument. I have tried many things to fix this and none of them have worked. Could someone please help me. Thanks in advance.
